Liz Elsworth

Multi Medium Artist

I have always been drawn to creative arts and crafts, from crochet and sewing to a wide range of needle crafts, often using online resources to learn new skills.

I began my painting journey with watercolours before discovering acrylics, and after joining the Art Society in 2015 I was quickly inspired by workshops and demonstrations to explore many different media and styles.

In recent years I have mainly worked in watercolours, pastels and oils, yet I continue to learn something new at every meeting.

Being part of the society has been both inspiring and rewarding, offering the opportunity to grow creatively within a friendly, supportive community of like-minded artists.

Aga Szczuka

Pastel Artist

I joined Caerphilly Art Society in 2022, and it has played a huge part in my development as an artist. Through the encouragement and inspiration I found there, I opened myself up to new media, started working with acrylics and watercolour, and ultimately discovered my love for pastels.

My work is centred on animals, with a focus on capturing their character and presence rather than just their appearance. I have recently moved from realistic portrait work towards a more abstract style, which has allowed me to explore feeling, movement and atmosphere more freely. I work mainly with soft pastels and pastel pencils, and my pieces often develop intuitively, aiming to reflect the essence and inner life of each animal.

Without the society, I genuinely don’t think I would be where I am today, or have had the confidence to push myself to try new things.

Mike Guilfoyle

Printmaker and Painter

I am a recently retired graphic designer and coin designer. For the last forty years I’ve designed coins and numismatic products for countries all over the world. I began printmaking and painting about five years ago as an antidote to the precise and technical world of coin design. I mainly create linocut prints, generally inspired by the natural beauty and culture of Wales.

Joining Caerphilly Art Society has allowed me to explore many different forms of art. The workshops and demonstrations always encourage me to try something new and, being such a supportive group, nobody judges the end result. It's great to try new mediums to get out of your comfort zone and develop as an artist.

Andrew Picton

Ink Artist

I’m Andrew Picton, a Welsh artist drawn to the quiet power of ink and the stories it can carry. My work is inspired by the stillness and beauty of nature, the elegance of Japanese calligraphy, and the emotional richness found in everyday life.

My drawings—both hand drawn and digital—explore themes of love, age, friendship, and the changing seasons. Every piece is created with mindfulness and intention. I aim to reflect the present moment: its stillness, its emotion, and its quiet beauty. Whether expressed through a single brushstroke or a digital print, my goal is to offer artwork that feels personal, poetic, and grounding.

I am still early in my journey with drawing and painting, but I’ve learned that imperfections are part of the story—part of what gives each piece its character. Caerphilly Art Society has given me the chance to share these stories, and I hope my work finds a place in your moment.
